FAQ
What is Mastopexy?
It is a surgical procedure to lift the breast into a more
youthful position.
Can I undergo Mastopexy?
Mastopexy can be carried out for following
reasons: 1. Sagging breasts. Breast can droop following pregnancy, weight
loss, age and with increase in breast size. When breast sags due to
increase in its size then breast reduction can reduce it as well as lift
it.
Is there any other option?
Surgery is the only way to lift the breast.
What tests do I require to undergo prior to
breast lift?
Blood
tests are required prior to any surgery. Additional tests such as x-ray,
cardiogram, physician check-up etc may be required depending on your
health status. These tests are carried out for your safety
Do I
need to have anaesthesia for the procedure?
You will
be put to sleep (general anaesthesia) for the procedure.
How is Mastopexy done?
Where breast sagging is severe breast skin
is removed is from the lower ½ of the breast. The residual breast skin is
approximated with the aid of stitches to form a youthful breast mound with
the nipple repositioned at the top of the mound. The only visible part of
the scar is about 5 cms long, which extends vertically below the nipple.
The remaining scar is hidden away under the breast in the breast fold. In
milder forms of drooping only a crescent of skin above the nipple or an
eccentric oval around the nipple need to be removed. Majority of the scars
fades to an acceptable level in 6 to 12 months time.
What to expect immediately after the operation?
The operation site will be covered with
dressing. Painkillers are prescribed after the operation. You will be up
and about in 24 hours.
How
long do I need to stay in hospital?
Stay in
hospital is for approximately 1 or 2 nights after the operation.
What
is the recovery period like?
At the
time of discharge waterproof dressing will be applied which will allow you
to have shower at home. Dressing change will be required every 4th
or 5th day for about 2 weeks. The stitches dissolve, so they do
not need to be removed. Light activity can be resumed within a week.
However heavy activity like going to the gymnasium/swimming etc can be
started 4 weeks after the operation.
What can go wrong?
However like any surgery, breast lift may
have side effects. Swelling and bruising of the breast goes away in 2 to 4
weeks time. Loss of nipple sensation may be present which usually comes
back in 4 to 6 month’s time.
Breast can sag again after few years, as the
effect of gravity cannot be eliminated. However where breast lift
accompanies breast reduction then the result tends to be more long
lasting.
What result to expect?
Majorities of the patients are satisfied with the outcome
of the breast lift surgery.
