FAQ
When is breast reduction
required?
Breast reduction is surgery to reduce the
size of the breasts. Large breast may cause physical discomfort such as
neck ache, shoulder ache, digging of brassiere strap etc. This, or for
personal reason one may opt for breast reduction. In some individuals one
side may be larger and this can be reduced to match the smaller side.
Are there any other options to
reduce the size of breast?
Surgery is the only way to reduce the size
of breast. There are no medications or creams which can reduce size of
breast.
Can I
undergo breast reduction?
If you are in good health then breast
reduction can be safely performed. To ensure this besides clinical
evaluation you may be required to undergo blood tests, x rays etc.
How is breast reduction
performed?
Breast reduction basically involves removing
excess breast tissue, tightening of the skin envelope to fit the reduced
size of the breast and repositioning the nipple to the centre of breast
mound. You are put to sleep (general anaesthesia) for the length of the
procedure.
What to expect immediately
after the operation?
You will have dressing covering the stitch
line. You will be up and about in approximately 24 hours. There will be a
thin plastic tube (drainage tube) coming out from the side of each breast.
This is usually removed within 48 hours, following which you will be
discharged from the hospital.
What is the recovery period
like?
Once at home you can resume light work. The
amount of work one can do varies from patient to patient. It is perfectly
all right to feel tired for few days after the operation. If you do so
it’s best to take some rest. You will require dressing change once or
twice a week till the healing is complete. This may take from 2 to 3
weeks.
You may be allowed shower after a week with
a waterproof dressing in place.
Heavy activities such as going to gymnasium,
swimming can be resumed approximately 4 to 5 weeks following the surgery.
Usually stitches are dissolving and hence
need not be removed.
Any side effects?
Swelling and bruising over the breast, if it
occurs, usually does not last more then 4 weeks. There will be scar around
the nipple which is usually not visible. Another 5 cm vertical scar will
extend from nipple to under the breast. There will be a horizontal scar in
the breast fold. All these scars can take up to a year to fade to an
acceptable level. Some individuals may not be able to breast feed
following breast reduction.
Nipple may become less or more sensitive
immediately following breast reduction. However this usually resolves in
few months.
Result
Majority of patients are happy with the
outcome and usually get a gratifying result.
